#897 Just a king in mirrors | Peter Tankey

$3,000.00

Oil on canvas

Height: 91cm. Width: 66cm.

The title "Just a king in mirrors" is a reference to the song by the same title by the Go-Betweens, the painting depicts a glass skull whose reflection has a ‘crown’ which is in fact an ash-tray. Reality at odds a fictionalized self.

I primarily make still life paintings, of objects that are not necessarily familiar or traditional to the genre. Initially i found the Still life a way to move away from making conceptual work and to make my practice entirely studio based. Naturally ideas and concepts find their way into the work beyond purely formal arrangements and application, its unavoidable. From pop songs (such as this piece) to social commentary, it creeps in to the work. Still life is just a neat way of avoiding having to ever take those concepts too seriously. Its just a painting after all. Its just a still life.
