#747 Burnt | Julie Pennington
Hand Built Ceramic. (Black Mid Fire clay)
Height: 6cm. Width: 14cm. Depth: 14cm.
The exploration of texture and pattern that underpins my work has been influenced by the effect of bushfires on our landscape. This piece references the dark textures to be found in the burnt remains of this recent catastrophic event.
I hand build using the traditional method of coiling, however rather than blending the coils together I have developed an interest in texturing each coil and building the form slowly and methodically using slip between each coil. I enjoy the direct engagement of working with my hands and the challenge of not using trimming or smoothing tools. In this way the immediate activity of making is vital to the outcome of the finished work. Much of my inspiration stems from my love of texture and pattern which I observe in the natural environment and from basketry and textiles.
