But You Can Fly | Kathy Chapman
Inkjet on Moab Somerset Museum Rag
66.3cm x 76.3cm
These photographs are part of a body of work exploring what it means to be 'other'. I am drawn to the surreal and I have chosen to explore the idea of living as one who is different or other through a surreal tale of a 'day tripper' visiting our world and experiencing the strangeness, sense of disconnect and isolation that those who are 'in this world, but not of it' feel. The three images in this submission form part of that narrative.
The images were captured on a Leica M10P, with a Summilux 50mm lens. The post-processing included colour balancing the images to introduce an unsettling and vertiginous green tone to emphasise the sense of strangeness that the main protagonist feels, moving through a world he cannot quite relate to. This image also contains some compositing (the birds). All the elements of this photograph were taken hand-held, in natural light in order to create a sense of this being a real world, imperfect and odd.
