Interview with Jess Le Clerc - 2018 Stanthorpe Art Prize People's Choice Winner

What made you decide to enter the Stanthorpe Art Prize in 2018?

I paint realistic portraiture and I search for art awards that acknowledge contemporary fine art, the Stanthorpe prize has a great reputation for choosing work that is of a high standard and strong in story, I really value those filters when choosing where to enter my art.

Has winning a prize in the 2018 Stanthorpe Art Prize changed anything in your art life?

Winning the People’s Choice helped my confidence, if hundreds of people decided they liked my work best in such a beautiful display of art, that really inspires me as I sit in the studio and paint new work. Having the Stanthorpe prize on my CV also has helped me gaining new work in 2019.

Did you gain any exposure from being a winner?

I did gain exposure and great connections with other artists and galleries.

Where has your work taken you since 2018?

Since 2018 I have been in several national prizes.

My Art school on the Sunshine Coast has grown significantly (the Art School Co.) I have worked on over 20 commissions pieces. And most recently I have begun my first solo body of work, showing in 2020. Its been a big season!!

Do you plan to enter the 2020 Stanthorpe Art Prize?

Yes of course. I fell in love with the region and ended up bringing my family of 6 over and camped on the lake in 2019, love the apple pies, the locals, and the wine!!
