The choice to use myself as the model was initially mere convenience, but as the painting progressed it became my most introspective, self-exposing portrait to date. There is an intensity in the gaze of a self portrait, a pointed arrow of focus as I scrutinise and document myself.
I am a tonal painter in the constant pursuit of light. Largely self-taught in oils, I am forever striving to capture light in paint, the way it falls on the subject, turning the transient moment into art.
