Buckingham street, Richmond | Evie Cahir
Oil stick and gouache on paper
Height: 110cm. Width: 82cm.
I have a habit of going for walks or riding my bike through Richmond and surrounding suburbs, returning to the studio to paint from memory. It is a romantic tradition - to convey emotion recollected in the tranquillity of my backyard studio - reprised for modern times using oil stick on paper.
Using bursts of thick oil stick pigment to depict the ever-changing shift of seasons in Australia, I use a technique best described as 'drawing in paint' to highlight the dialogue between abstraction and representation. Inspired by Fauvism, I am committed to distilling the immediate and subjective experience of the artist.
