Granite Belt residents will be aware of the talents of The Occasional Players – the very talented and experienced musicians who have entertained over many years at various events for the Gallery as well as performing at events throughout the region. There is a newly formed group, the Southern Downs String Ensemble, which comprises participants from The Occasional Players as well as many members who are learning or expanding their skills with the more experienced players.
SDSE was to have a concert in the Civic Centre on 23rd April, and the Granite Belt Choir had planned an event on 7th May. Given the likelihood that people attending as audience to one group would also be interested in the performance of the other group, it was decided to combine forces and have one concert. Are you starting to feel as though you are getting two for the price of one?
The GBC concert was always going to be billed as “A Celebration of Life” and several of the pieces to be performed have been selected with reference to the passing in the last year or so of three people associated with the choir – Mike Bathersby (patron of GBC for many years), Graham Pyle (GBC member for many years), and Paul Reed (Contempo member for many years). Also on the agenda was the fact that several members of GBC wanted to sing a Mass setting but couldn’t concur on which particular one. The easy solution was to select some favourite bits from several composers. Be prepared to be roused by Vivaldi’s Gloria and massaged by Faure’s In Paradisum.
SDSE add the “… and Music” component to the concert title. They have selected a number of everyone’s favourite pieces to demonstrate the skills of the experienced members and the rising talents we have in the region too. The philosophy of the group is to include pieces for musicians from advanced down to beginners. You’ll hear some film music as well as some traditional classical pieces.
