Aunty Barb Walker is a senior Wiradjuri woman living in Pittsworth.
“I love teaching people as to how they can make very useful articles, and reintroducing weaving back into everyday activities. It is a very relaxing and productive activity that all can do and achieve.”
Waybarra mawang ‘Weaving all together’
This program stems from the Wiradjuri people of central and southern New South Wales. Although it is a program that identifies from indigenous culture, its application is valuable for all who participate, indigenous and non-indigenous.
Whilst participating the students are being taught traditional Wiradjuri waaya-ma-rra [coiling] weave. At the same time, they are participating in the cultural act of yayalanha [yarning], where they also discuss what it means to be a proud and empowered woman.
Many Indigenous peoples are renowned for their basket-weaving techniques.
