Bookbinding demo

Monique Buchbach, a professional bookbinder, will demonstrate how to create a book from re-purposed & interesting materials.

This will be followed up with a full day workshop the month where you can make your own.

Attend this demonstration first so that you have an idea of what items would be useful to collect before the full workshop.

About Monique Buchbach

I completed an apprenticeship in bookbinding at the Queensland State Library in 1995 and went on to work for a commercial business designing and making photograph albums.  Because I missed working in libraries I retrained as a Library Technician and I have been working in libraries (with books) since 2001.  My love of books and bookbinding is only surpassed by my love of teaching others how to make books.  I love the structure of books and the multitude of ways they can be made and used.  My favourite style of binding is the Coptic stitch because of its simplicity and versatility.  It’s naked decorative spine is very flexible and opens flat.  I use a mix of new and re-purposed materials in my bindings.  I like the effect of mixing text and images with blank pages so that when my book is finished it is not full of blank pages.  I have experimented with creating my own dyes with red cabbage, onion skins, turmeric root as well as tea and coffee.  Re-purposing materials and making my own dyes is a small way of ‘binding’ sustainability into my books.
