Interview with Kirsten Perry
We catch up with Kirsten Perry who won the 3D Cast Award in the 2021 Stanthorpe Art Prize with her work Textural story of hope.
What made you decide to enter the Stanthorpe Art Prize in 2020/1?
I decided to enter the prize as there were very specific categories for 3D works and casting which is what my ceramic practice mainly involves. It’s a prize that caters for the differences between making in 3D.
Has winning first prize in the 2021 Stanthorpe Art Prize changed anything in your art life?
Part of the prize money that allows for the continuation of my practice and purchasing new materials, it takes the pressure off a bit and allows time for some creative exploration. Also adding the prize winner status to my CV is perhaps bringing recognition and validation. It could help me to enter more art prizes successfully.
Did you gain any exposure from being a winner?
The exposure I gained was mainly through my social media and the lovely support I have through my followers on Instagram. Also, my family could see that my work was credited.
Where has your work taken you since 2021?
Covid happened in 2021 so I had extra time in my studio in Melbourne during that time that allowed for more personal explorations. The work was a lot more philosophical and helped me through that difficult time. I also tried a larger scale of work to enter into outdoor sculpture competitions.
Do you plan to enter the 2024 Stanthorpe Art Prize?
Yes I plan to enter. It’s always a chance to showcase some special work you feel like getting out there.
